Our History

Tracing our journey from establishment to academic excellence

Established 1975

Ramat Library was established in 1975 as the central library of the University of Maiduguri. Named after the famous Nigerian poet and scholar Ahmed Ibrahim Ramat, the library has grown from a small collection to become one of the largest academic libraries in Northern Nigeria.

Over the years, the library has expanded its collections to include books, journals, electronic resources, and multimedia materials. Today, we serve over 25,000 students and 1,500 academic staff with a collection of over 500,000 volumes.

The library continues to evolve with technology, offering digital services, online databases, and e-learning resources to support modern academic needs.

Located on the first floor of the Ramat Library main building. Provides resources on American culture, literature, and society, with access to free online databases, study materials, and internet laptops for research.

Guidelines for a productive library experience

Research Services

Materials in the Research and Bibliographic Services Division may not be borrowed except with special permission of the University Librarian. On-site consultation available during working hours.

Serials Division

Current and back issues of periodicals may be borrowed by senior members of staff for overnight loan only. Must be returned by 10:00 AM the following day.

E-Library Resources

The e-library has fifty (50) databases comprising both open access and subscribed resources. Access is available through the library website and within the library premises.
